'Wor Yitso Ekomey,' masks (set of 3)

Madam Adwoa and the artisans at her workshop, Onyame Akwan Dooso, seek to preserve the long-standing traditions and customs of Ghana with this finely carved Mope trio entitled Wor Yitso Ekomey (“We Are of One Mind”).

Adwoa refers to the long standing respect for royal descendents and people will often times greet each other with the Akan expression Odehyie mmba, “my royal fellows.”

These extraordinary sese wood images have been carved with traditional, hand-made tools, and depict a woman of royal lineage or high social ranking, the mask of a noble man, and the bust of a wise man. Their features are striking, with the woman bearing a high forehead and downcast glance. Each wears a headdress minimally carved with delicate patterns, and their presence serves to remind of ancient traditions and customs that recall their glorious ancestors. Madam Adwoa applies Mansion polish to enhance the flawless carvings and add a modest shine to the pieces. The trio makes for an exceptional reminder of Africa's social history and is certain to enthrall the viewer.
