Wood mask, 'Togbe'

The angular face of a village elder is made captivating by the ornamental markings of the Ewe, delicately replicated for this mask by Daniel Nyadedzor. The Ewes hail from the Volta region of Ghana and age is no imposition, for the men and women will continue to work at their chores. Nyadedzor hand-carves this mask of a togbe (elder) from sese wood with locally handmade tools to extract the fine facial contours. Once the mask is ready he gives it an antique look by applying a fine coating of yellow and white clay and finished the piece with aluminum plates embossed with traditional patterns. An extraordinary vision of tradition for the admirer of African arts.

Daniel Nyadedzor has been featured in the San Antonio Express News.

"I was born in May, 1972 in the eastern region of Ghana. In 1996, after finishing school and a year's national service, I decided to help my brother who was a carver and had his own shop. I did all his paperwork.

"Initially, the work done did not measure up to internationally accepted standards. Quality control was poor. However, after working with him for a few months I realized the need to incorporate certain measures. After tasking ourselves to reach the international standards, the business grew tremendously. We have been working together all these years.

"We acquire a type of hardwood known as sese for carving the masks. Other materials we use are potassium, emulsion red or black paint, metal plate and sometimes clay. There are about twenty people working with us. The nature of our work involves the chipping of wood to get a desired figure or shape. It is polished and sandpapered for a smooth and quality object. Red and black emulsion paint is then used for the finishing. The image is first sketched on paper and then given to the apprentices to carve. Sometimes, our customers also come up with interesting ideas, too.

"Our products are always given the antique finishing. Our customers especially love our antique finishing and their kind remarks and comments spur us on to do better."
