Wood mask, 'Family Horn'

Inspired by Yoruba belief in family unity, Kwasi Forson makes of this mask a powerful tribute to age-old beliefs. Forson's detailed mask includes two lateral faces to reflect the value placed on the family, and so this mask becomes a symbol of the strength in family unity. Hand-carved from local sese wood, the intricate detailed work attests to Forson's excellence as a master carver. "I was born on February 22, 1970 in the eastern region of Ghana. I had a chance to meet a friend of my brother who works with him as a carver. This happened when I was visiting my brother after my middle school education and I had nothing to do. Sometimes I would go there to help him at the shop. It then happened that my brother traveled and left the shop for me to run with his friend the carver; it was then that his friend took that opportunity to teach me how to carve, having seen the great talent in me. It was really a great time I had learning when my brother was away for two years. After those two years I worked with him for some time and now on my own. I really love the carving profession and put all my strength in it to come out with the best. I am married with a daughter who is six years old."
