Wood mask, 'Bundu Chief'

Grand, opulent features define this mask, representative of Bundu artistry. The piece revels in its brass decorations, suggesting a chief or man of high social ranking. Its title, Odikro, refers to the ruler of an area. Carved from sese wood, the mask is designed by Madam Adwoa and sculpted by the skilled artisans of Onyame Akwan Dooso, her Ghanaian workshop. West African masks have evolved from many influences, incorporating historical, cultural, ritual, and personal factors. They speak the language of a tribe, ethnicity, or cultural entity, expressing ideas both within the group and to those belonging to other peoples and communities.
