Wood mask, 'A Friendly Ghost'

Somber, the impressive visage stares from beneath thick brows, long hair drawn back from a wide forehead of vast intelligence. His eyes have seen the great beyond, and he is reaping his just merits. Wood mask, 'A Friendly Ghost'

Somber, the impressive visage stares from beneath thick brows, long hair drawn back from a wide forehead of vast intelligence. His eyes have seen the great beyond, and he is reaping his just merits. This is not always so. In West Africa, it is believed that when people who do good die, their ghosts are good ones, but for those who do evil, their ghosts must atone. Samuel Coleman creates this extraordinary ghost mask in native sese wood. He carefully sculpts the figure and lets the wood dry naturally before polishing it to a fine finish with black, brown and mansion polish. Saman Pa means good ghost.

"I was born on November 24, 1974. I stayed with my mother and started schooling at the Methodist primary school in town. I then moved to where my father stays, to be with him and to continue my education. I therefore studied at the Swedru School of Business where I took General Arts as a subject. While I was there, I was very much involved in the school's cultural troupe and performed with them. Upon completion of the Swedru School, I was a bit stranded with no money to further my education at the university level. Due to my interest in all things cultural things, I then decided to get involved in artworks, especially carving - drums to be specific. I moved back with my mother and then went under a three year training period, and now I am a master training three boys in the art of drum-making."
