Wood mask, 'Spirit Protector'

Gaunt features evoke ancestral spirits, as thin lips part in a toothy smile. Juliana Akandas sculpts a mask from the Akan people of Ghana. Used for initiation into the first secret society, its features convey the drama and seriousness of the event. Akandas enhances the mask with the intricate texture of brass repoussé. She names it Brekete, meaning "protector."
