Wood mask, 'Golden Lord Ganesha'

With wise eyes and gentle smile, this image of Ganesha pays tribute to one of the most beloved Hindu semi-gods. He is attributed with writing the Mahabharata, one of India's most famous epic legends. His great elephant head rests on a human body, and he is worshipped at the beginning of important ceremonies. Prithvi Raj Kumawat achieves refined detail in this kadam wood mask as he works with manual carving tools. Then, with golden paint, he crowns the great Lord of Wisdom. Features an iron hook for hanging.

The story of Ganesha begins with the god Siwa as he meditates with his pregnant consort, the Goddess Parwati, in Kailasa palace on the peak of Ice Mountain. During this time a powerful demon appears, wanting to destroy heaven. The only thing that can kill the demon and prevent the destruction of heaven is a demi-god who is neither animal nor human, but rather a combination of the two. The group of gods brings an elephant before Parwati, who has just given birth. She casts a powerful spell upon the unwitting creature, causing her newborn baby to take on characteristics of the powerful elephant and, in effect, creating the half-animal, half-man demi-god that can fight off the demon. The baby Ganesha then succeeds in killing the cruel demon and solidifying his legend. He is also referred to as Vinayakitt, or god of knowledge, and Vighneshwer, the remover of obstacles.

Kumawat

"Hi everyone, my name is Prithvi Raj Kumawat and I was born on August 14, 1964. I began to train in the art of crafts when I was ten years old. My parents were financially unable to support my studies so I had to earn money myself to provide for my education. So, while I was training, I studied. I never intended to end up in this profession of crafting, but I had no other choice. However, today I realize this is what destiny had in store for me.

"For fifteen long years I was trained by my cousin, Chhote Lal Kumawat. During this time as a trainee I really learned and understood the art of crafting. By 1983, I was able to work independently. My line of products includes all types of wooden handicrafts, but my specialty is Natraj, as well as other Hindu deities.

"I am proud to say, my effort and hard work eventually paid off, and in 1986 I was honored with the Rajasthan State Award. I have also participated in numerous exhibitions in and around the country. In 1998 and 1999, I was honored to participate in the Dubai Shopping Festivial, which is regarded as a prestigious event.

"It's good to be associated with Novica. Through Novica I'm already getting good responses from art lovers across the globe. Each purchase motivates me and encourages me to present the finest quality."

Novica is honored to congratulate Kumawat for being the recipient of the 2004 National Merit Certificate for Master Craftperson, an award presented by India's Ministry of Textiles.
