The monkey is considered a holy animal in the Balinese Hindu tradition. In the Ramayana epic, an army of monkeys helps Rama save queen Sita from evil. Monkeys are also ubiquitous in everyday Balinese life. They roam the temple grounds disrupting religious ceremonies with cackles. Nyoman Setiawan carves the mask of pule wood, favored for its light weight and subtle color.
