Partima

"My name is Nyoman Partima. I was born in Bali and grew up living a simple way of life. When I was 17, I learned traditional Balinese painting from Made Darmawan, a senior painter. After doing traditional painting for three years, I then worked at a Japanese garment company. Their specialty was producing kimonos, and I created saisiki (painting for kimonos) for almost seven years. In 1997, because of the global monetary crisis, business in the company was not good and was getting worse day by day. At the same time, a friend of mind suggested I make use of my painting ability applying motifs and colors to wooden statuettes.

"A year later I started to work seriously on crafting painted items in wood in the form of dolls, masks and statues. Comments and suggestions I receive from other people encourage me to be more creative and professional in my work."
