Wayan Arsana

"My name is Wayan Arsana and I was born in 1971 in the Gianyar Regency of Bali. When other people in the village were learning to paint, my father chose instead to open a shop selling handicrafts and artworks, such as paintings, statuettes, and masks. I, on the other hand, developed an interest in the creative process.

"One day I found an old pattern for a mask and I decided to make it. I didn't think anyone would like this, my first mask, but to my surprise they did! From then on, I decided to craft my own products inspired by old Balinese stories; I love to paint them with traditional motifs. Animals and shadow puppets have also become my source of inspiration.

"For me, art is the freedom to express an ideal and to let people perceive it as they like - art has multidimensional values. I see tradition as a dynamic value and I am open to new and modern values, as part of a change. I hope my artworks will be accepted by the art community and that they will be a useful contribution."
