'Kesuna,' mask

Greed and envy are personified in Kesuna, masterfully captured in albesia wood by Ketut Widana. Her long face and serious demeanor reflect the selfishness in her heart, which ultimately casts Kesuna from her home according to one of Bali’s tales of moral teachings.

An exceptional carver, Widana’s depiction of the evil sister is carved with sublime elegance and detail. A stunning mask for the collector of universal crafts.

The story goes that Kesuna betrayed Bawang, her sister, and thus had to leave her home. Consumed with sadness, Bawang prayed the gods to help her. She heard birds singing and Bawang joined in their song. The birds began to peck her wrists, neck and head, eventually giving her golden jewelry and a crown. Later in the story a greedy Kesuna tried to imitate her sister’s actions hoping to receive gold, and all she received instead where snakes around her wrists, neck and head.

Ketut Widana

"My name is Ketut Widana and I was born in Kalah area, Peliatan village, Ubud district, Gianyar regency, Bali province on December 22, 1975. I learned making art works, especially sculpture, from my family; most of them worked as wood carvers. Since years ago this village of Peliatan, Ubud is known for its famous wood carvers.

"When I was still in elementary school I was very interested in artwork. So I started making art works made of wood, even though in a very simple form such as in the form of fruits. I did it until I graduated from Junior High School. In the middle of my study in Senior High School I started to thinking that I must improve my knowledge and my talent. Then I turned my sculpture into animal figure with the material, form, and finishing in a more complicated way. I learned those things from people around me by looking at the process of making the sculpture and asked the senior wood carver about the things on sculpture.

"I spent almost ten years to learn about wood sculpture in the form of animal figure. Later on I was thinking of facing buyers on my own by opening my first art shop. It was a small art shop but I can use it to show my works. But there was a problem with money, so I turned to antique statuette (making new statue and create them so they will look as if they were antique statues). The selling of this kind of thing (antique statue) is pretty good."
