Wood mask, 'Native Beauty'

Bakota is the name of an ancestral spirit of fertility and protection, its origin traces to the Kota people of Gabon. This mask takes the shape of a Bakota doll, its feminine grace complemented by delicate facial features and elaborate accessories. A sterling example of ancestral artistry, the piece is sure to lend a protective influence to any setting.

Designed by Madam Adwoa, this mask is sculpted by the skilled artisans of Onyame Akwan Dooso, her Ghanaian workshop. West African masks have evolved from many influences, incorporating historical, cultural, ritual, and personal factors. They speak the language of a tribe, ethnicity, or cultural entity, expressing ideas both within the group and to those belonging to other peoples and communities. Madam Adwoa translates these themes using local sese wood as her material inspiration.

Madam Adwoa & Onyame Akwan Dooso

Madam Adwoa became involved in handicrafts through her mother, who sold Adinkra symbols and kente cloths. While helping her mother, she began to offer a small number of woodcarvings, which to her surprise sold very well in the market. This inspired Madam Adwoa to pursue woodcarving as a career. After a period of careful instruction in the creation and finishing of finely sculpted objects, she opened up her own workshop, under the banner, "God moves in mysterious ways."

Currently Madam Adwoa heads a team of fifteen artisans in her workshop. As a highly evolved and dedicated creator, she demands only the best from her staff.
